Children's International Wildlife Sanctuary Inc. is a non-profit organization formed in August 1995 to educate the public and to replenish, sustain, and preserve our natural resources and wildlife for future generations. (see Wolves Unlimited) In June 1996, CIWS received an advance letter of determination from the Internal Revenue Service. The IRS has determined CIWS is exempt from Federal Income Tax under section 501(a) of the Internal Revenue Code as an organization described in section 501(c)(3). In April 1996, with the advice and assistance of the US Dept. of Agriculture, US Dept. of Interior, and NYS Dept. of Agriculture, CIWS acquired two (2) Rocky Mountain Elk (wapiti) from the mid-western United States.
On April 13, the two one year old elk were released in a remote 28 hectare (70 acre) enclosure in upstate New York, USA. The enclosure consists of woods and meadows with a flowing stream, 3 ponds, and a swamp. It is an ideal habitat where the elk can live undisturbed until CIWS can raise the funds required for a permanent home. Throughout 1996 and 1997, CIWS surveyed or interviewed tens of thousands of students between the ages of seven and twenty. The purpose was to find out what the children wanted concerning the environment and wildlife. CIWS was very impressed with the answers and ideas of the students. One recurring idea was a wildlife sanctuary, including what facilities and animals should be at the sanctuary. We have moved very slowly and cautiously to minimize mistakes. CIWS is now undertaking a major fund raising campaign so we may carry out the children's wishes of a Wildlife Sanctuary for the 21st Century. You have the opportunity to assist in the accomplishment of our children's endeavors. Donors may deduct contributions to CIWS as provided in section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code. Bequests, legacies, transfers, or gifts to CIWS or for CIWS use are deductible for Federal estate and gift tax purposes if they meet the applicable provisions of sections 2055, 2106, and 2522 of the Code. Per the original filing as a nonprofit organization, CIWS does not or will not attempt to lobby for or influence legislation. CIWS does not and will not intervene in any way in political campaigns, including the publication or distribution of statements. Donors may deduct contributions to CIWS only to the extent that their contributions are gifts, with no consideration received. Contributions to CIWS are deductible by donors beginning August 18, 1995. Contributions can be mailed to: |
